HMRC Set to Gain Direct Bank Account Debt Recovery Powers from July 2029 Following Budget Announcement
HMRC (His Majesty's Revenue and Customs) is set to gain new powers allowing it to recover tax debts directly from bank accounts from July 2029, following an announcement by Chancellor in the Budget. The powers would allow HMRC to automatically deduct debts from account holders without first obtaining a court judgment, raising questions in the financial and legal community about the burden of proof applied when HMRC calculates the debt. City AM reported that the new regime has sparked concern about how the taxman determines the amount of tax owed before triggering a deduction, particularly given the absence of a judicial authorisation step. The powers are not yet in force and will not take effect until July 2029.
