Standard Chartered receives in-principle approval to distribute wealth management products from India's GIFT City hub
Standard Chartered plc has received in-principle approval from the relevant Indian regulatory authority to distribute wealth management products from Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), India's dedicated international financial services centre and tax-advantaged hub. The bank expects to launch retail offerings from the centre over the coming months. The approval follows the bank's broader Signature CIO fund strategy, under which four funds (Conservative, Income, Balanced, and Growth) have collectively raised $5 billion since their 2022 launch, with Amundi Asset Management acting as investment manager across the four strategies. The four funds generated compound annual growth rates between approximately 5.6% and 15.7% in the year to October 2025. GIFT City operates as a special economic zone designed to attract international financial institutions to India, offering regulatory and tax conditions distinct from the broader Indian market. The expansion marks a further step by Standard Chartered in positioning itself to capture growing demand for wealth management services in India.
Why this matters
GIFT City has emerged as a focal point for international banks seeking regulated access to Indian wealth management markets, offering a streamlined entry point that bypasses some of the complexity of operating under the full domestic regulatory framework. Standard Chartered's approval signals that the hub is maturing into a serious distribution channel for international asset management products rather than remaining primarily a corporate banking venue. For London-based financial institutions and their legal advisers, GIFT City structures represent a growing area of cross-border regulatory work as more UK-listed banks seek to grow Asian wealth management businesses.
On the Ground
This type of expansion activates banking regulatory, financial services authorisation, cross-border fund distribution, and investment management practices. The legal work involves coordinating regulatory licence applications, advising on fund distribution agreements and the terms under which managed funds can be marketed in a new jurisdiction, and reviewing the contractual documentation with the investment manager. A trainee would assist with regulatory filing coordination, reviewing licence condition summaries, and drafting cross-border legal opinion coordination memos for local Indian counsel.
