CATL unveils world's first commercially validated sodium-ion battery energy storage system in Munich, raising new EU regulatory and supply chain questions
CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited), the world's largest battery manufacturer by volume, has officially launched the TENER Sodium Energy Storage System — described as the world's first real-world validated sodium-ion BESS (battery energy storage system) — at an event in Munich. The product has reached full commercial maturity across technology, production capacity, and supply chain readiness, according to CATL. Cumulative shipments are expected to reach 1 GWh (gigawatt-hour) by the end of 2026, with global deliveries beginning in June 2027. The TENER Sodium delivers more than 30 MWh (megawatt-hours) of rated capacity on a modular architecture, with energy and power blocks decoupled to support flexible storage durations of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours. The system uses sodium-ion chemistry — sodium is described as more than 1,000 times more abundant than lithium and more widely distributed geographically — offering improved extreme-temperature performance and reduced supply chain concentration risk compared to lithium-based systems. Amanda Xu, CTO of CATL's Energy Storage division and President of ESS Europe, delivered the keynote in Munich. The European launch is significant: CATL is positioning the product directly at European energy transition markets, at a moment when the EU is simultaneously increasing scrutiny of Chinese battery manufacturers through trade defence instruments and relying on their technological capability to hit renewable energy targets.
