Thomson Reuters has published an action paper based on its fourth annual 2026 Future of Professionals Report, drawing on responses from 736 law firm professionals and 203 corporate legal professionals. The findings paint a sharp picture of AI adoption pressure across the legal market. Almost one-quarter of law firm professionals surveyed say they would refuse a job offer from a firm that lacks professional-grade AI tools, directly linking AI investment to talent retention and recruitment. The paper identifies misalignment between an individual professional's AI preferences and their firm's strategy as a driver of attrition risk, particularly among those who value mentorship and skill development. On the client side, the pressure is equally acute: almost one-third of corporate legal professionals say they are reconsidering their relationships with outside law firms that cannot demonstrate how they will deliver clear AI-enabled value within the next 12 months. Clients expect outside counsel to use AI to improve productivity, quality, and innovation, but the paper notes that few corporate legal teams believe their law firms are currently meeting those expectations. The third dimension identified is the business and pricing model challenge. Many firms feel financial pressure to accelerate AI adoption, but the majority have not adjusted their pricing structures to reflect AI-driven efficiencies. The implicit tension is that AI reduces the time taken to complete tasks traditionally billed by the hour, which compresses revenue under existing pricing models unless firms move toward value-based or fixed-fee arrangements. The paper frames this as a structural challenge that firm leaders must address proactively rather than reactively.
